Pre-Enrollment Tips
Enrolling in classes will change with the implementation of a new student information system this March. CoursEnroll and Add/Drop are now the same function in the new Student Center (Just the Facts), they just happen at different times. The new Student Center (Just the Facts) is available ONLY at http://studentcenter.cornell.edu.
Follow the tips on this sheet to submit your pre-enrollment requests as quickly as possible when your enrollment appointment opens.
Be prepared
- Pick out your courses — Look through the online Courses of Study to pick out the courses you want. Take note of the new 4-digit numbers in parenthesis after the 3-digit number (i.e., CHEM 251(2510)), now called Catalog Numbers rather than Course Numbers, you will need them. To help you transition to the new 4-digit course number system, try the course number converter. Please note the caveats on that page about the accuracy of the 4-digit numbers.
- See your advisor — There is no longer an advisor key, but your advisor may set your “Eligible to Enroll” flag to NO, preventing you from entering any classes until you see them. See your advisor BEFORE you pre-enroll to make sure they sign off on your class choices. Once your pre-enrollment appointment time opens and you’ve submitted your requests, you can email your advisor from within Student Center (Just the Facts) to let them know.
- Create your schedule — Don’t rely on Schedulizer. The changes may affect its accuracy or availability. Beginning March 24, you can start using the Class Search feature in the new Student Center (Just the Facts) to build your schedule.
It's time to pre-enroll, what's different?
For more information about how pre-enrollment works, please read the Enrollment page.
There are now three steps to submitting a pre-enrollment request in the new Student Center (Just the Facts). You must complete all three steps before your request is submitted:
- Select a Class (and set Enrollment Preferences);
- Confirm Your Request; and
- Finish Enrolling.
Once you’ve finished enrolling, you can still go in and make changes until your enrollment appointment time is over.
- Strategy—You can enter your classes one at a time (i.e., enter your highest priority class first and complete all three steps, then
do the next class, etc.)
OR
enter all of your classes in the “shopping cart” and then complete steps 2 and 3. Just remember that your request is not submitted until you’ve completed step three. - Do not click more than once on any given action. This could slow down your response time significantly.
- What do I do on the Enrollment Preferences screen? If a class has an online wait list, you will see the option above the Permission Nbr. field, check it if you want to be on a wait list. Ignore the Permission Nbr. field for now, we’re not using it this time around. If there is a choice for Grade Option or number of Units (credits), you’ll be able to choose them here.
- New features
Swap a class — Swapping classes ensures the one you want to add is open BEFORE dropping you from the class for which you’re already pre-enrolled.
Wait List — A limited number of classes have online wait lists. If there is a wait list, you will see the option on the Enrollment Preferences screen in step 1 above the Permission Nbr. field.
Important Tips
- PROTECT YOUR DATA. QUIT YOUR BROWSER TO LOG OUT.
During pre-enrollment and add/drop there is a 30-minute window after which you will be logged out if you haven’t touched the mouse or keyboard. Outside of those times there is a 3-minute window. However, to ensure no one can come in after you and see your personal information (SSN included) always quit the browser completely to log out when you’re done with the Student Center (Just the Facts). - Do not log in from multiple browsers or machines to perform the same task.
- To get back home from anywhere in the Student Center look for the drop down box (always in the upper right and lower left corners of a page), choose Student Center and click the >> button).
Searching for classes
The class search function in the new Student Center (Just the Facts) is more powerful (check out the Additional Search Criteria) and, for first time users, potentially more confusing with new terminology and numbering. It is the most accurate listing of classes being offered next fall.
The Fall 2008 Course & Time Roster is now available.
Whichever resource you use, be sure to write down the Class Number for all the classes (lectures, discussion sections, labs, etc.) you want to take, this is the fastest way to enter classes once you start enrolling.
- Go to the Student Center (Just the Facts) before pre-enrollment and click on the “Search for Classes” button to familiarize yourself with how it works. You can Search for Classes or Browse the Catalog, however, there are no long descriptions in the Catalog, so look at Courses of Study beforehand.
- To search for classes in the new Student Center (Just the Facts) you will need the new 4-digit catalog number rather than the old 3-digit course number. Also, the abbreviations for Course Subjects though basically the same, need to be entered without any special characters or spaces to work, e.g. A&EP is now AEP. If you’re not sure, click “Select Subject” to get a list.
- The old 6-digit Course ID (CID) has been replaced by the 4 or 5-digit Class Number. The Class Number is available both in online searches [in parenthesis after the section number – i.e., Section 001-LEC(1008) – (1008) is the Class Number] and in the Course/Time Roster.
- The new Course/Time Roster uses military time with the hours numbered from 00 (midnight) to 23 (11 pm). A 1:25-2:40 class will appear as 13:25-14:40.
