Enrolling in Classes
Use the Student Center to request classes for the upcoming semester during the pre-enrollment period and to add or drop classes for the current semester during the add/drop period.
To pre-enroll or add/drop classes…
1. See your advisor. Advisors approach pre-enrollment and add/drop differently. Some may want to work with you to enter classes, others may want you to have already entered your class requests before you see them. Be sure that you know your advisor's preferences.
If you cannot access enrollment during your assigned enrollment appointment time or during the add/drop period…
- Look at the Holds box on the Student Center home page. If there is a hold, click on “Details” then click on the “Hold Item” link to find out what you need to do to clear the hold.
- Your college/advisor can set the “Eligible to Enroll” flag to NO. If they do this, it will appear as a “No Enrollment in Classes” hold on your record, making it necessary to see them before you can enroll in any classes both during pre-enrollment and the add/drop period.
- If there are no holds, check the Enrollment Dates box on the Student Center home page to be sure you’re in the right time period. If your enrollment appointment is incorrect, please contact your college registrar's office.
2. Enter your class requests. There are three steps to adding a class:
- Select a Class (and set Enrollment Preferences);
- Confirm Your Request; and
- Finish Enrolling.
You can enter your classes one at a time (i.e., enter your highest priority class first and complete all three steps, then do the next class, etc.) or enter all of your classes in the “shopping cart” and then complete steps 2 and 3. Just remember that your request is not submitted until you’ve completed step three.
3. Make changes to your class requests. You can log-in as many times as you like during your pre-enrollment period to adjust your requests. You can add, drop or swap classes. Swapping classes ensures the one you want to add is open before dropping you from the class for which you’re already pre-enrolled.
If your advisor wants you to enter your class requests before your advising session, be sure to complete the third step or he/she will not be able to view your classes in the Faculty Center.
4. For pre-enrollment only...finalize your schedule and submit your requests before the end of your pre-enrollment period. After this time, you cannot make any changes to your pre-enrollment request. You can add and drop during the add/drop period at the beginning of the semester.
You may log-in 24 hours a day, during the pre-enrollment and add/drop periods.
Important Tips
- PROTECT YOUR DATA. QUIT YOUR BROWSER TO LOG OUT.
During pre-enrollment and add/drop there is a 30-minute window after which you will be logged out if you haven’t touched the mouse or keyboard. Outside of those times there is a 3-minute window. However, to ensure no one can come in after you and see your personal information (SSN included) always quit the browser completely to log out when you’re done with the Student Center (Just the Facts). - Do not click more than once on any given action. This could slow down your response time significantly.
- Do not log in from multiple browsers or machines to perform the same task.
- To get back home from anywhere in the Student Center look for the drop down box (always in the upper right and lower left corners of a page), choose Student Center and click the >> button).
Searching for classes
The class search function in the Student Center is powerful (check out the Additional Search Criteria). It is the most accurate listing of classes being offered for that semester.
- Click on the “Search for Classes” button. There are no long descriptions in the Student Center, so look at the Courses of Study beforehand.
- You need the 4-digit catalog number and the course subject abbreviation. (The abbreviations need to be entered without any special characters or spaces, e.g. A&EP is now AEP). If you’re not sure, click “Select Subject” to get a list.
- Write down the Class Number for all the classes (lectures, discussion sections, labs, etc.) you want to take, this is the fastest way to enter classes once you start enrolling. The Class Number is available both in online searches [in parenthesis after the section number – i.e., Section 001-LEC(1008) – (1008) is the Class Number] and in the Course/Time Roster*.
*A PDF of the Course & Time Roster, which is updated regularly, is available each semester. The Roster uses military time with the hours numbered from 00 (midnight) to 23 (11 pm). A 1:25-2:40 class will appear as 13:25-14:40.

How to Access the Student Center
The new Student Center is only available at http://studentcenter.cornell.edu. You need your NetID and password.
You can access the Student Center through any networked computer with an appropriate web browser in the libraries, college registrar offices, community centers and public computer labs.
You will not be able to pre-enroll or add/drop classes outside of the pre-enrollment and add/drop periods.
Recommended Browsers
While there are a number of browsers that will work, the short list of CIT supported system/browser configurations includes:
- Windows XP / Internet Explorer 6
- Mac OSX / Safari 1.0 and 2.0
Other system configurations that work include Firefox 1.0 on Linux; IE7 and Mozilla Firefox on a PC and Mozilla Firefox on a Mac. The last three options might require you to adjust your tab settings in the browser to behave as expected.
